THIS week the Australian prime minister, John Howard, was
unsuccessful in his efforts to have Zimbabwe suspended from the
Commonwealth at the so-called Troika meeting at Abuja in Nigeria. The
other two Troika leaders present - from South Africa and Nigeria -
said the panel should give Mugabe another six months to improve human
rights, promote political reconciliation and cooperate with a UN land
reform programme - before considering suspending Zimbabwe. We have
seen the results of such prevarication before.
Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe is rapidly becoming Africa's Burma. The
