The Chadian Army scored a major military victory over Libya early
this week when it routed a 1,000-man Libyan garrison in northeastern
Chad and captured scores of Soviet-built tanks and six military
airplanes, according to a senior U.S. official.
The official described the Chadian takeover of Fada in the
Libyan-occupied northern third of Chad as "an important defeat" and
predicted "it will give the Libyan command a lot to think about."
"It seems to me obvious that it was a rout," said the official,
who is traveling with Secretary of State George P. Shultz on his
eight-day trip to sub-Saharan Africa. The Fada battle appears to
