HOWARD BEACH, N.Y.-A blue-and-white police car is parked day and
night in a cramped lot outside the New Pizzeria on the corner of 57th
Avenue and Cross Bay Parkway. Last Sunday afternoon, the two
officers in the car were tight-lipped. They didn't need to explain
that they were a protective presence. Everyone in the neighborhood
knew. Violence flared here once; it could again.
The pizzeria is at the center of racial and political tension
that has clenched this South Queens community of 30,000 citizens
since the night of Dec. 20, when three black men were gang-attacked
