Article: Tenants face 16 per cent rent rise to stay with council

ABERDEEN City Council tenants yesterday voted overwhelmingly in favour of keeping the authority as their landlord following a referendum - a decision which could see their rents rising by more than 16 per cent over the next four years.

Tenants were offered the choice of keeping the housing stock in council ownership or having houses transferred to a non-profit- making organisation.

More than 17,000 tenants voted in favour of the local authority, despite the threatened rent rises, while only 1,094 voted for the transfer option in the referendum which attracted a turnout of almost 60 per cent.
