Article: Leader: A dark and dangerous trait in Downing Street

IN ABOUT two months' time, Britain could well be led into war against Iraq by an administration which can't seem to arrange the purchase of two flats without drowning itself in a sea of spin.

As Downing Street never tires of saying, nothing illegal has happened in the so-called "Cheriegate" affair. No code of conduct has been broken. Which makes it all the more staggering that such a mess has been allowed to develop. Something which is perfectly legal has managed to be turned into a farce which has exploded in the face of the government. And these are the people who are preparing to handle an armed conflict.
