Secretary of State George P. Shultz, after talks today with
President Samuel K. Doe, described the Liberian political situation
as significantly improved and called for the opposition to end its
boycott of the National Assembly.
Shultz, in comments likely to prove controversial here and
possibly on Capitol Hill as well, said he thought there was a
"positive" trend and "genuine progress" toward greater democracy in
Liberia.
Following the 75-minute meeting with Doe, and just before a
session with eight opposition leaders, Shultz said he intended to
urge Doe's opponents to "take up their seats and voice their views if
they are contrary to government policy and not to refuse to take
part."
