A WOMAN'S risk of breast cancer increases by 6 per cent for every
alcoholic drink she has on a daily basis, according to new research.
The Cancer Research UK study also suggests that alcohol accounts
for 4 per cent of the 2,000 cases of breast cancer each year in the
UK. The charity yesterday warned that the number of cases would rise
if women's alcohol consumption continues to increase.
The report - the world's largest study of women's tobacco and
alcohol habits - also found that smoking, which causes other types of
cancer, does not contribute to breast cancer. However, the
researchers pointed out that women who drink are at a lower risk of
heart disease and stroke than non-drinkers.
