THE remote Hebridean islands of St Kilda, the jewel in Scotland's
natural history crown, are set to join a global elite group of only
23 other sites, granted double designation as areas of world heritage
status.
The island group is Britain's only natural world heritage site,
ranked alongside the Great Barrier Reef, Yellowstone National Park
and the Galapagos Islands as an area of global environmental
importance.
But the Scottish Executive is now championing a fresh bid to have
the islands' world heritage status extended to cover the
archipelago's fragile marine environment and its cultural heritage.
Should the application be granted, St Kilda would join an
exclusive club with dual world ...
