LIKE many fee-paying parents, I was aghast at Edinburgh
University's plans to tilt its admissions policy in favour of poorer
students, but now I think I can support this radical stance.
If more well-heeled youngsters are rejected, there will be a drop
in the student population in my street, where rents are high, and,
subsequently, a drastic reduction in the number of navy-blue Golf
GTIs clogging up the parking spaces.
Although parking may appear a rather trivial matter when compared
to a child's education, it does not seem that way first thing in the
morning, and I am heartened that a neighbour has brought our corner
