Waterways are woven into the daily life of a number of
fascinating cities around the world. Italy's Venice, with its 177
canals, nearly 400 bridges and 100 islands, is perhaps the most
famous. But there are others in which the canals provide a means of
transportation and commerce, and several in which the waterways serve
mainly as a decorative complement to the city's architecture. Among
the canal cities of the world:
Bangkok. In Thailand, klongs (canals) play an essential role-they
are part of a complex, 200-year-old network of waterways. Visitors
