About 40 miles east of Santo Domingo, a monument rises above the
flat plains on the south coast of the Dominican Republic like a
pyramid built for the sun god of a dead religion. For those
traveling between the airport and the beautiful resort area of La
Romana, the stone structure in San Pedro de Macori's is little more
than a curiosity. But Tetelo Vargas Stadium is neither tomb nor
curio. It is home to the Estrellas Orientales-the Eastern Stars-and
a celebration of baseball, the national sport of the Dominican
Republic.
In the streets around the stadium, youngsters swing bats or
sticks at baseballs, or rubber balls, or wads of rag, and run to
bases make of old newspapers weighted down ...
