CHARLOTTE Brannan had just drifted off to sleep when she was
jolted awake by a thunderous noise she thought was an earthquake. But
the first blast was followed immediately by a second.
She leapt out of bed with her American husband, Tal, and called
her sons, Joe, 15, and Benjamin, 13, to gather downstairs.
All were unhurt but there was horror outside in the Jadawel
International Compound. A pall of smoke and dust hung over damaged
houses and wrecked cars. There was a charred, disembodied hand on the
