Sir Alex Smith, eminent educationist
Born: 15 October, 1922, in Lossiemouth Died: 28 February, 2003, in
Cheshire, aged 80
ALEX Smith was a pioneer in making higher education available to a
wider public. At Manchester Polytechnic, he started courses in
hitherto unconventional subjects and created a flexible system that
allowed students to take day-release courses.
To make education more accessible was one of his major objectives
and he achieved it with remarkable success.
He was a much respected member of many educational committees
where his incisive and inquiring mind ensured the agenda was dealt
with comprehensively and questions were answered in detail. His grasp
