ALEX Smith was a pioneer in making higher education available to a wider public. At Manchester Polytechnic, he started courses in hitherto unconventional subjects and created a flexible system that allowed students to take day-release courses.

To make education more accessible was one of his major objectives and he achieved it with remarkable success.
