Montgomery County has a big problem. Gov. William Donald
Schaefer can't find it on his map.
"Where does Montgomery County belong?" he asks. "Is it in
Washington? Is it in Virginia? Is it in Maryland? Where does
Montgomery County fit in?"
A lot of Montgomery Countians are asking the same question.
The county is turning to the state for more road and school funds
just as Schaefer, an unabashed Baltimorean, becomes governor.
Montgomery wants more money from the state. Schaefer wants more
money from Montgomery.
The conflict dates back to the Great Riot of 1812 when a
sanctimonious Montgomery Countian, Alexander Contee Hanson, insisted
on printing a pro-Tory newspaper in ultra-Republican ...
