Mary Betts Anderson, 85, a Washington artist who had dozens of
local exhibitions, died May 3 of a stroke at George Washington
University Hospital. She lived in the District.
Ms. Anderson was born in Richmond and was a direct descendant of
Thomas Jefferson. As the daughter of an Army general, she traveled
widely in her youth, living in Panama, China and the Philippines, as
well as various locales in the United States.
She graduated from George Washington University in 1943 and also
studied at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. With her husband,
a Foreign Service officer, she lived in London, Oslo, Lima, Peru, and
Rangoon, Burma, in the 1940s and 1950s. She had made her home in
Washington ...
