Bernie Lodge, rugby administrator
Born: 1921, in Cardiff Died: 1 June, 2003, in Edinburgh, aged 82
EDINBURGH rugby has lost one of its greatest servants with the
death of Bernie Lodge. Born within the shadow of the stand at Cardiff
Arms Park, it was only fitting that he should have been a passionate
player and supporter of the game of rugby football.
Following his education at Aberdare Primary and Canton High School
in Cardiff, he was briefly an apprentice surveyor before deciding to
join the Inland Revenue. At this time, he was playing in the second
row of the scrum for one of the Neath clubs, but all this was to
change when Hitler's war started. Lodge joined the Gloucesters and
