Article: Private car use at an all-time high as public transport takes a back seat

TRAFFIC levels on Scotland's roads have reached an all-time high, while moves to boost public transport show little sign of bearing fruit, official figures showed yesterday.

The evidence of soaring car use at the expense of bus and rail confirms a damning analysis of the government's transport record by Scottish academics, revealed by The Scotsman last week.

Total traffic in Scotland increased by 4 per cent last year to 41.3billion vehicle kilometres (25.8billion vehicle miles), and was up by 18 per cent on 1993.

In addition, improved calculation methods revealed that traffic had increased every year since then, rather than remaining broadly unchanged, as had been previously thought.
