Article: U.S. Moving Naval Force To Northern Persian Gulf;Support for Arab Allies Shown as Iranians Advance

The United States is sending five naval vessels northward in the Persian Gulf and moving an aircraft carrier task force closer to that strategic region to reassure friendly Arab states of U.S. support following Iranian military advances against Iraq, administration officials said yesterday.

The U.S. naval movements and accompanying political steps, which Secretary of State George P. Shultz referred to in testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, were described by some officials as an implicit warning to Iran against striking at Arab nations across the Persian Gulf.
