Article: Iran Claims It Advances 1.2 Miles Toward Basra;Communique Cites New Attack in Iraq

After three days of relative stalemate on the war front in southern Iraq, Iran today claimed a 1.2-mile advance through Iraqi defenses protecting the strategic port city of Basra.

A communique issued by the Iranian high command tonight said that Iran had launched a new attack west of the Jasim River last night and had managed to push 1.2 miles down the road from the Iranian border toward Basra in contested Iraqi territory.

The Iranians claimed to have captured the commander of Iraq's 46th Brigade and to have "completely smashed" a total of four Iraqi brigades. The claims could not be verified independently.
