THE decision by Bill Wilson, an SNP activist, to challenge John
Swinney for the party leadership has sparked a vicious bout of in-
fighting which is threatening to cause serious divisions within the
parliamentary party.
Dr Wilson announced two days ago that he would be running for the
SNP leadership at its party conference this September.
His decision cast a cloud over preparations for Mr Swinney's
wedding to a BBC journalist, Elizabeth Quigley, due to take place in
Edinburgh today.
But it also meant the start of a period of political blood-
letting which is likely to continue until the contest for the
leadership, to be staged at the end of September.
