Article: 'Control freak' Swinney apes New Labour spin, claims challenger

JOHN Swinney's leadership of the SNP has encouraged a climate of control-freakery and spin more typically associated with New Labour, his challenger claimed yesterday.

Dr Bill Wilson, who is standing against Mr Swinney at the SNP's September conference, said "vitriolic" attacks against him by supporters of the party leadership were symptomatic of the trend.

And he claimed it was leading to a growing schism between the leadership and the grassroots which could split the party if left unchecked.

Dr Wilson's comments came after his decision last month to contest the leadership of the SNP.
