DOCTORS in Scotland are fed up with issuing sick notes,and want to
have their role as "gatekeeper" removed, according to research from
the University of Aberdeen published today.
The study shows that many doctors feel the sick note system is
compromising the doctor-patient relationship.
Several GPs feel that if they do not sign a note, the patient will
go elsewhere - a practice known as "doctor shopping" - while others
just do not have the time to challenge patients about requests for
sick notes.
GPs in Glasgow, Tayside and the Highlands were asked their views
about the self-certification system, which are published on the
British Medical Journal's website today.
