Article: Executive cash for mountain rescue

PLANS for the government to fund half the annual running costs of Scotland's mountain rescue teams were praised yesterday - with a warning that more help was needed.

The Scottish Executive is to plough GBP 1.2 million into funding the 24 civilian teams over the next three years, quadrupling its current support for the frontline emergency service.

The government is also planning increased financial support for the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, helping fund the first full- time safety officer to drive home the safety message to the 70,000 climbers who take to Scotland's hills every weekend.
