Pope John Paul II cleared the way for the beatification of Edith
Stein, a Jewish-born Catholic nun killed in the Nazi concentration
camp of Auschwitz, Vatican sources said this week.
The beatification ceremony was expected to take place during the
pope's trip to West Germany in May. Beatification is the penultimate
step leading to sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church.
The Vatican said the pontiff approved a decree proclaiming Stein
a Catholic martyr. The decree, which sources said cleared the path
for beatification, said Stein was killed because of "hatred for the
faith" and recognized her "heroic virtues."
