Mozart's 231st birthday was feted Saturday in a clever and
creative program by the University of Maryland music department.
Opera dominated the evening, in both the all-instrumental first half
and the vocal portion after the intermission.
After a ragged account of the "Marriage of Figaro" Overture, the
largely student orchestra was joined by faculty pianist Nelita True
for the most glittering, richly scored and operatic of Mozart's 27
piano concertos, the E-flat, K. 428.
Under conductor William Hudson, the 40 players of the orchestra
displayed more youthful energy than precise ensemble-no wonder, since
the strings and winds were physically separated on the cramped
platform of Tawes ...
