Sir Rudolf Bing, legendary for taming prima donnas and maestros
during his 22 years as general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, has
been swept away, friends say, by a mysterious younger woman who
recently married him in Arlington and left with the ailing
85-year-old impresario for the Caribbean.
Bing suffers from Alzheimer's disease, a degenerative condition
characterized by failing memory and general loss of competence,
according to a New York judge who found him incompetent and appointed
attorney Millard Midonick as his guardian and attorney Paul Guth as
conservator of his estimated $900,000 estate. Bing also has an
income of about $130,000 a year from pensions and annuities.
