THE true identity of a "secret cardinal", who was appointed by Pope John Paul II, will never be known, it was revealed yesterday.

Pope John Paul II announced in 2003 that he had created a new cardinal "in pectore" - which means "in the heart". This system is used where the elevation of the individual to a cardinal could put his life in danger.

At the time it was rumoured that the new cardinal was from China, where the Catholic Church has an uneasy relationship with the communist government.
