LOCALS have mounted a spirited defence of John o' Groats after it
was branded a "seedy tourist trap" by the world-renowned Lonely
Planet travel guide.
The new book is generally positive about Scotland in its latest
guide to Britain, but says of John O'Groats: "If John was a person,
he'd be a second-hand car salesman or a gerrymandering politician.
How else to explain the seedy tourist trap that has grown around the
lie that it is the most northerly place in Britain? It's not, that
title goes to Dunnet Head."
Deborah Fermor, 42, manager of John o' Groats Ferries, said: "It's
ridiculous, these authors have obviously never been here. They're
just making it up or copying from previous guides. ...
