HUNDREDS of children waiting for surgery are being placed on
"hidden waiting lists" and have no guarantee of being treated within
nine months, it was revealed yesterday.
The children are among more than 35,000 people who are assigned an
availability status code (ASC) because operations are delayed for
personal, social or clinical reasons.
This means that they do not have to be treated within nine months
and will not show up on waiting lists if they are kept waiting longer
than this period.
Opposition politicians say the code is being used to manipulate
waiting lists and keep numbers down. For example, at the end of March
