PUPILS from poorer backgrounds would get free meals during the
school holidays under plans being considered by the Scottish
Executive.
Ministers are also planning to increase the number of children who
are entitled to free school meals.
Peter Peacock, the education minister, will today meet children's
charities and anti-poverty campaigners, some of whom have called for
free school meals to be made available to all pupils.
Executive sources insisted last nightthat ministers were still
firmly against that proposal. But sources say Mr Peacock will "float
the idea" of introducing free meals during the school holidays - an
initiative that is already up and running in East Renfrewshire.
