ITV pulled the plug on its rolling news channel yesterday, in a
move that could lead to the loss of 70 jobs at the news provider,
ITN.
Launched by ITN five years ago, the ITV News Channel became
Britain's third 24-hour news channel alongside Sky News and the BBC's
News 24. However, ITV recently cut the news channel's output on
Freeview, the digital TV platform, from 24 hours to 12 to allow space
for its new ITV4 digital channel.
ITV executives took the decision to axe the channel because they
need space on Freeview for a new ITV children's channel, planned for
next February.
ITN staff were told of the decision in a 30-minute meeting
yesterday at the company's headquarters in Grays Inn ...
