Former investment banker Dennis B. Levine was sentenced today to
two years in prison and $362,000 in fines for his central role in the
biggest Wall Street insider-trading scandal ever.
The 34-year-old Levine, who faced a maximum of 20 years in
prison, appeared stonefaced as U.S. District Judge Gerard L. Goettel
rendered the sentence. Levine's family, including his wife Laurie,
also displayed little emotion.
The two-year prison term is likely to provoke calls in Washington
and elsewhere for stiffer sentences for Wall Street crimes. Top
securities lawyers had been watching the Levine sentencing because
they expected it would be the stiffest handed down in this burgeoning
