I suppose when the monkeys around us began laughing I should have
understood. Here we were-20 white men and women (some aging, some
just timid)-gathered at the gorge of Africa's great, mystical Zambezi
River, preparing for a seven-day rafting trip through 60 miles of
white water that until a few years ago had never been navigated by
whites.
Since then, a band of river addicts from California has run this
trip about 20 times and was now guiding us. But they eat, drink,
practically breathe white water. Most of us were either new to the
sport or had confined our adventures to friendly, trout-filled
American rivers. The Zambezi, on the other hand, is reputed to turn
