Article: NHS warning over 'hidden' waiting lists

MINISTERS face "major challenges" to meet future waiting- time targets because of the rising number of people on "hidden waiting lists", watchdogs warned yesterday.

Audit Scotland found the Executive has made "significant progress" in cutting the amount of people waiting more than six months for inpatient or outpatient treatment.

However, the number of patients with no waiting-time guarantees has risen to more than 35,000, with 24,000 waiting more than six months.

When these "hidden waiting lists" are scrapped next year it will make it much more difficult to meet the new maximum waiting time of 18 weeks by the end of 2007.
