YOUNG leaders from the former Soviet Union marked a decade of the
John Smith Memorial Trust when they arrived in Edinburgh this week
for a five-week programme on democracy and good practice in
governance.
The trust, a cross-party charity, was established to provide a
permanent memorial to John Smith, the Labour leader who died in 1994.
The trust's fellowship programme began in 1996 in an effort to help
the next generation of leaders in independent republics previously
part of the Soviet Union.
