The Vatican rallied today to the defense of its three top bank officials, including American Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, after an Italian court ordered their arrest as "accessories to fraudulent bankruptcy" in connection with Italy's biggest banking scandal since World War II.

Two days after two magistrates in Milan signed arrest warrants for the Vatican bankers in connection with the collapse in 1982 of the Banco Ambrosiano, the Vatican issued a communique expressing its "profound astonishment" at the action and hinting that it would not tolerate Italian government interference in Vatican affairs.
