Article: Capital to focus on 20 per cent more CCTV cameras

THE number of CCTV cameras in Edinburgh is to rise by almost 20 per cent, it emerged yesterday.

The plans come in the wake of figures which show that such footage contributed to more than 1,100 arrests last year - with an average of one crime captured on film about every 70 minutes in the capital.

Under proposals which are expected to be approved next week, Edinburgh City Council will install up to 30 new cameras.

Existing cameras will also be upgraded while an additional seven mobile CCTV units will be purchased. The devices can be used to monitor events such as outdoor concerts, gatherings and protest marches.
