For those used to traditional performances, a computer music
concert can be disconcerting. At the University of Maryland Computer
Music Festival at Tawes Recital Hall last night, the start of each
piece was signaled not by a raised baton or poised hand at a
keyboard, but by the click of a tape recorder.
Two of the four works were for "solo" computer-generated tape:
"Field" by Curtis Roads and "In Winter Shine" by James Dashow, both
produced at the MIT Experimental Studio. Dashow's composition was
appealing, with sparkling sounds that moved around the room in an
enjoyable complexity.
