THERE WAS A TIME WHEN WRITING an autobiography was something to be
done at the end of a life well-lived. Or perhaps even later than
that. As Samuel Goldwyn said, "I don't think anyone should write
their autobiography until after they're dead". A number of this
year's autobiographers should really have taken this advice.
Particularly the marauding horde of reality TV "stars", the majority
of them under 25, who have flooded the market with breathless, ghost-
written tales of triumph over adversity.
There is the ever-present Big Brother contestant Jade Goody, whose
