It is only a matter of time before any number of terrible things
happen in the world. One of them happened yesterday. Danny Kaye
died.
To children of more than one generation, there was no easy way
to say the name "Danny Kaye" without smiling. It became a phrase of
magical, liberating associations, like "ice cream." To see him in
performance was to ride a carrousel, or sneak into the circus, or
spend a Sunday afternoon at the ball park with Dad. You could have
all the hot dogs you wanted.
Danny Kaye didn't start out as primarily a children's
entertainer. In the '40s he was considered quite the sophisticated
