Article: Modern Indian Army on Display in Desert Exercise

A 150,000-strong Indian Army force began moving through the Rajasthan Desert east of here today in the largest military exercises ever mounted by this country.

The exercises, called Operation Brass Tacks, were delayed by border tensions with Pakistan. They are designed in part to test new mobile infantry alignments and a newly developed, computerized communications and intelligence network modeled on British and French systems. The United States is purchasing the French system.

The exercises reflect what one western diplomatic observer called India's emergence as a "first-class fighting force. This is not a Third World army. This is a modern army fully competent for any mission."
