PRODUCTION has started on the Buzzard oil field, which was
considered the largest offshore discovery in British waters for more
than a decade when it was found in 2001, with gross recoverable
reserves of approximately 550 million barrels of oil equivalent
The field is capable of supplying approximately 10 per cent of
Britain's annual forecast oil demand at peak rates, and its start has
been eagerly anticipated. It is in 100m of water, approximately 100
km north-east of Aberdeen.
It is planned to be developed with 27 production wells and 11
water injection wells. Oil production is shipped to market via the BP
operated Forties pipeline system, while gas is exported via the Total-
