Article: Dutch central bank warning over RBS bid

THE Royal Bank of Scotland consortium attempting to derail any Barclays' bid for ABN Amro received a potentially serious setback yesterday when the Dutch central bank said that any consortium rival offer could entail "strong risks and complications".

It came after ABN Amro, Holland's biggest bank, agreed late on Tuesday it would meet RBS and its partners - Santander of Spain and Belgo-Dutch bank Belgo - next week even as it extended exclusive takeover talks with Barclays from yesterday's deadline to this Friday.

The DNB, the Dutch central bank, said in a statement from Amsterdam: "From a prudential point of view, a bid by the consortium would be very risky and complicated, in the execution ...
