Article: First Milk agrees Asda cheese deal worth GBP 100m a year

THERE was more good news for dairy farmers yesterday when First Milk, the farmer-owned business with 3,000 members, announced an agreement with Asda to supply a range of regional cheeses from its creameries in Scotland, England and Wales.

The deal is a renewal of the contract to supply all of Asda's own label cheese, which First Milk inherited when it acquired part of Dairy Crest's cheese business last year. The arrangement extends the existing contract for a minimum of 18 months. Industry sources say that up to 20,000 tonnes of cheese will be involved, which could be worth more than GBP 100 million to First Milk each year.
