RANGERS were fined GBP 8,280 yesterday for the behaviour of some
of their fans during a UEFA Cup tie against Osasuna - a relatively
minor punishment which at least partially vindicates the club's
arguments about who should bear responsibility for an evening of
mayhem in Pamplona.
The fine from UEFA was close to the minimal punishment, and
contrasted with the sum of GBP 31,050 which Osasuna must pay. Rangers
were fined for the misbehaviour of some of their supporters at the
match, while the hosts were adjudged to have been chiefly responsible
for the chaotic scenes which saw fans clash with police amid
accusations of inadequate segregation.
