Article: Airlines hit by 22 per cent surge in passenger complaints

COMPLAINTS about airlines increased by more than a fifth last year as thousands of passengers railed against delayed and cancelled flights.

The Air Transport Users Council (AUC) - the UK's aviation industry watchdog - received more than 12,000 complaints in 2006-7 and warned that there is "every indication that the current level of demand [for its assistance ] is here to stay."

However, the true number of people dissatisfied with airlines - and the compensation they receive as a result of delays or cancellations - is likely to be far higher. Complaints to the AUC represent only a tiny proportion of unhappy travellers, as they deal
