MORE than 800 heart attacks in Scotland could be prevented each
year if people with a family history of the problem were given
screening and treatment, experts claimed yesterday.
A study by a team of researchers from Glasgow University found
screening could stop more than four in ten heart attacks in younger
age groups.
The team is now hoping to carry out a further study in Scottish
hospitals to see if targeting heart attack victims' relatives could
prevent further illness.
Last night, campaigners welcomed the calls for screening of high-
risk groups.
