Last year, the D.C. school board decided that students who do not
maintain at least a C average will not be allowed to participate in
extracurricular activities, including athletics.
Do you think the C-average policy is wise? Is it fair? What
effect has it had on your school? Does this rule make students pay
extra attention to their studies?
The C-average policy is a wise decision. It affects the school's
grade point average . . . but what it really does is make students
more responsible. The rule helps students to prove to themselves
that they are intelligent as well as talented. As an athlete, singer
or cheerleader, by maintaining a C average, the student becomes a
well-rounded person.
