HE IS the famously abrasive tycoon whose TV catchphrase "You're fired!" has entered the national consciousness.

But Sir Alan Sugar, the star of BBC 1's The Apprentice, was last night in the unlikely position of working for someone else after selling his Amstrad empire to satellite broadcaster BSkyB for GBP 125 million.

Sir Alan, who began his business life trading from the back of a van in London's East End, will continue to run the firm in a deal which will net him about GBP 35 million. It will swell an GBP 830 million personal fortune built on consumer electronics and lately real estate.
