The percentage of working mothers in Maryland with children
under 6 leapt from 60 percent in 1980 to more than 75 percent last
year, aggravating the already critical shortage of licensed day care
facilities in the state, according to a report released today.
At the same time, income for single mothers continues to lag far
behind that of married couples, said the report of the Maryland
Committee for Children, making it increasingly difficult to pay for
day care.
The result: Mothers are dumping their children at unlicensed and
illegal day care facilities, said Evelyn Slaght, public policy
